Quotes by John Wooden – Be Quick but Don’t Hurry

This is a saying that the Coach himself took some time to explain in one of his books, although I don’t remember which one. It has taken me some time to understand it myself, and now I will put down my thoughts on the matter. I think it gets down to being good at something through all the steps on the pyramid of success, then naturally doing it well and smoothly.
When you hurry, you make unneeded mistakes. When you are good at something, you can do it quickly and accurately. Think about the first time you ever shot a basketball. Did you get your elbow under the ball? Did you use the backboard when it was better to do so? Probably not, you learned these things through practice, instruction, and experimentation. So, when you have an open shot in a game, it is a matter that you use good technique instinctively, and shoot quickly and appropriately. If you didn’t have adequate practice and instruction, you might have hurried the shot, and been more likely to miss.
How does this apply to life in a useful way? Have you ever made a hurried decision that you wish you could have back? Does it haunt you later, because you now realize your mistake and wouldn’t have done it that way again? Now you could do it quickly and accurately because of the learning experience mistakes offer, if you are willing to examine your behavior and correct it. When you get good at something through practice and repletion in manufacturing, a famous company described the improvements in terms of the “learning curve”. Everyone who slowly and deliberately paced themselves the first time around now works more quickly. The team gets quicker, and actually is less sloppy. That is the difference between being quick and hurrying.
